Poland's (Polska) Ministry of the Interior and Administration is working on changes to citizenship rules. Areas under discussion include a higher level of Polish, a knowledge test about the country and a stricter assessment of the applicant's lasting ties with the state.
Raising the language threshold from B1 to B2 has been presented as a planned measure. Official guidance on recognition as a citizen continues to specify B1, subject to statutory exceptions and accepted ways of demonstrating proficiency. B2 should not be treated as mandatory solely on the basis of news about a draft proposal.
Recognition as a citizen by a voivode and the granting of citizenship by the president are separate procedures. Residence periods and conditions depend on the specific legal basis; this report does not establish a new universal period for all foreigners.
Before applying, check the current requirements for the chosen procedure and the date on which amendments take effect. Discussion of a test or new financial criteria does not itself replace the law or automatically reject an application already submitted.
