A check at the EU’s external border
On 26 October 2026, customs officers at Koroszczyn found 41 live lizards in a truck entering from Belarus. The Lublin branch of Poland’s National Revenue Administration, KAS, reported the discovery.
The animals were found in the cab and near the trailer’s refrigeration unit. Preliminary examination indicated that some species fall under CITES rules. “Some” matters: the statement does not give every seized lizard an identical protection status.
The animals’ market value was provisionally estimated at around PLN 100 thousand. They were transferred to the Central Animal Sanctuary. Protected specimens require appropriate transport documentation; the particular infringement and liability are matters for the proceedings.
