Nominal prices versus affordability

On 24 October 2026, Euronews published a grocery-price comparison using Numbeo data. For Poland, the sum of 18 listed items was EUR 49.60. Each item was counted once, without consumption weights.

This is an illustrative basket, not a family’s monthly diet or an official all-items consumer-price index. Numbeo collects user submissions; citing Eurostat for household spending elsewhere in the article does not turn this basket into Eurostat statistics.

Lower nominal prices do not establish better affordability for residents. Income and purchasing power must also be considered. A broad claim that an entire country is cheap therefore goes beyond what this comparison establishes.
